Dementia Gwynedd (working with Dementia Actif Gwynedd) have set up a Super Group, co-ordinated by Emma Quaeck and her dedicated team. This is a gathering of people and a forum for discussions around Dementia. The Super Group includes people living with Dementia, their family members, professionals from Cyngor Gwynedd, BCUHB, and third sector and private organisations.
Fran Lowden, the Community Catalyst for Gwynedd, was invited to the latest meeting held earlier this month. From start to end, there was no shortage of engaging presentations, sharing of information, and creating meaningful connections for the future.
Kicking off the day was a Tai Chi Movement for Wellbeing exercise Emma uses to wake up the body and release energy to the organs, muscles, joints, and nerves. Who knew this tapping technique would not only help as an icebreaker, but it also aided our concentration and focus, so was the perfect way to start the day.
The agenda included a very informative session from North Wales Fire and Rescue Service. They discussed the ways in which they can help provide equipment and advice to help reduce the risk of fires for those living with Dementia. They are working hard to help raise awareness of the services they offer so that the message reaches those people living in our communities who could benefit from the support.
We also heard how the Dwyfor Community Garden has given unpaid carers a chance to connect with each other and share their experiences. This safe space has become an escape from the often challenging journey of supporting someone living with Dementia. It was very touching to hear the first-hand stories that were shared.
Alex Stirling, a Speech and Language Therapy PHD student, introduced her research project funded by the Alzheimer’s Society that aims to support better conversations for people with Dementia and their family members/friends by developing a communication training package. Alex was keen to hear from people living with Dementia, their family/friends, and also professional stakeholders to give them the chance to help shape this exciting project.
It was clear to see how much this group means, and the hard work that goes into it both in front and behind the scenes. The Dementia Gwynedd Strategic Plan that has been developed really emphasises this. Created in collaboration with those attending the Super Group, the plan sets out its vision for the future, and it is clear to see we can all help in different ways.
