Mental health funding programme by Bupa

Bupa’s mental health funding programme for 2019 is now open and will focus on improving mental health in mid-life.

Background information
Mental wellbeing underpins good health and impacts everyone. It is estimated that one in four people will experience a mental health problem each year, yet many will receive no treatment at all.

For some, mid-life can be a time of increased responsibilities, challenges and pressures, in their working lives, family lives and relationships. The prevalence of mental illness peaks among people in their middle years.

Within this funding programme the Bupa UK Foundation is looking to fund practical, community-focused projects that will support and improve people’s mental health at this critical life-stage.
Guidance for applicants

When deciding which projects to fund Bupa will pay particular attention to who will benefit and the difference a project is likely to make to their health and wellbeing. They will look at how this will be demonstrated, using simple and realistic measures. They will also consider whether a project might deliver a long-term legacy or learning that can be shared more widely.

If you decide to apply, please ensure your application meets all the following criteria:

  • Your project or initiative will support people in mid-life. Suggested age range 30s to 50s.
  • Your project focuses specifically on supporting and improving people’s mental health and wellbeing, rather than on addressing wider social issues.
  • Your application clearly explains how you will reach, engage and directly support individuals in improving their mental health and wellbeing.
  • Your application outlines how you will measure and evaluate the difference your project makes to the mental health and wellbeing of individual participants.

The maximum level of funding available for each grant awarded within this funding programme is £20,000. You are advised to apply for the level of funding you think your project requires to deliver the outputs and impact you outline in your application, however, this should represent no more than 10 per cent of your organisation’s annual turnover.

Please note that projects awarded funding from the Bupa UK Foundation automatically receive an additional 15% of the grant awarded as a contribution to core costs.

All applications must be submitted through the Bupa UK Foundation’s online application system and only one application will be considered per organisation.
