A Friend When Needed

A Friend When Needed is a bespoke befriending and companion service.

It can be a voice that can advocate for you, help you at medical and other appointments and, if needed, explain what has been said to you using everyday language.  We can take you home and stay with you after hospital discharge until a family member can be with you.  We can be your friend when you are lonely, or someone to sit and chat with over coffee.  A Friend When Needed can help and guide you when shopping for everyday items or for a special occasion.  We can assist in alleviating loneliness and can help you increase your independence.

Who am I?  The majority of my life I have worked and volunteered with older and disabled people for organisations such as Shopmobility, Somerset Sight, Salvation Army and Cancer Research.  I have worked in care homes as an activities coordinator and carer and am a volunteer for the Macular Society and the local Support Group in Taunton.  This has given me in-depth knowledge, training and experience of many kinds of disabilities including sight and hearing loss, mobility and special needs.  I have a degree in Health and Social Care and an enhanced DBS, and I am trained in assisted guiding, dementia awareness, assisted mobility, gadgets to help in everyday life and can help with exercises to increase mobility and movement.

A Friend When Needed is based in Taunton and is available Monday to Friday between 9-5.  Other times and days are available on request.

Charges start when we meet you at the place of your choice after completing our simple form.  Any extra costs such as public transport and refreshments to be met by you unless previously arranged otherwise.  For insurance reasons we do not provide transport at present.  Unsocial hours and weekends are negotiable and will be at an increased rate.  Our rates are affordable and realistic at £11 per hour or £70 per day, and a special discounted rate is available for two people using the service at the same time.
