BIG Health and Fitness was started by Myself (Graham Waugh) after my own experience of obesity, and the struggle to achieve sustainable weight loss. In 2012 I was one of the heaviest men in the UK at 52 stone. I had been a recluse for 15 years and felt trapped in my own home. My experience of working from 52 stone through to being a qualified personal trainer has given him a unique insight into making the fitness process more accessible and supportive.

My journey to fitness inspired me to ensure that there are safe places where others can come to develop their fitness; without fear of being judged or laughed at.

The BIG Health and Fitness gyms and personal trainers have been specifically developed to be supportive and encouraging, not intimidating. We are a fitness organisation like no other and work with our members to overcome significant barriers, setting them on a path to a healthier lifestyle and improved fitness.

BIG Gyms

A BIG Gym is not just a gym. It is a safe place to exercise where there is community and friendship, not judgement or orders. Our gym and personal training services have been developed to be considerate of the challenges that many can find in a gym. This has resulted in a community who are all working together to improve their health and striving to see change. We know that not everyone works at the same pace, nor finds the same motivations. By working together, we can support each other and celebrate each other’s successes.

Participating in social gatherings and enjoying exercise together can have the additional benefits of a decreased risk of loneliness, improving mood and increasing memory function.

Our Ethos

Getting fit doesn’t have to be complicated. It’s not just about attending a class, it’s about having access to ongoing support throughout the week to encourage and inspire every body on their journey. We’re not going to preach or expect sudden or immediate change. We believe that the most successful approach to developing fitness is through a balanced diet and a sustainable approach to weight loss and fitness.

BIG Health and Fitness are experienced in delivering specialist classes for a wide range of clients with differing needs. We adapt our classes to ensure each member is fully included, and all health needs, worries or fears are taken into account.

Getting Involved

There are a range of membership options available. We also work closely with our local GPs, the Active Luton scheme and the Disability Resource Centre. We are authorised providers within the social prescription scheme. We are keen to develop as many ways as possible to make fitness and a healthier lifestyle accessible to everyone.

The Disability Resource Centre is home to BIG Health & Fitness’ innovative and fully accessible exercise space in Dunstable.  We offer a wide range of classes. It also houses 12 pieces of specialist equipment that run tailor made routines that adapt to your needs. BIG Health & Fitness are currently the only fitness provider in the UK to have this range of equipment.
