Lewisham Speaking Up

Contact details

We are an advocacy and self advocacy charity organisation started in 2005, that speaks up for the rights, views, and wishes of people with learning disabilities living in Lewisham.

We aim to give people with learning disabilities a stronger voice and help them to be heard in the following ways:

  • 1-2-1 Advocacy Service: led by volunteer advocates.  Contact info@lsup.org.uk for any enquiries.
  • People’s Parliament Project funded by Comic Relief.  This is a big forum for all people with learning disabilities in Lewisham which is held quarterly and the next one on 6th October, is on Health.  We welcome bosses and decision makers to come for the feedback session. Contact martin.stitchman@lsup.org.uk for any enquiries.
  • Big Speaking Up Group funded by Main Grant Scheme, London Borough of Lewisham.  A speaking up group that happens every month for all people with learning disabilities, but mostly independent travellers or those that can self advocate.  People choose the issues, although we use the group to inform people what is going on in the learning disabilities world.  We invite guest speakers, and often the topics chosen inform the topic for our parliaments.  Contact martin.stitchman@lsup.org.uk for any enquiries.
  • Speak Up and Well Being Project for people with learning disabilities who do not get support services and who are lonely or isolated.  The project is aimed at teaching and encouraging people to develop friendships and to problem solve, and the group runs on Tuesdays.  Contact martin.stitchman@lsup.org.uk for any enquiries.
  • Hate Crime Advocacy Project which has 1 lead person and 6 trainers with learning disabilities who are paid and who are being trained as experts by experience.  The project is aimed at raising awareness of recognition of hate crime and how to report it, and holds workshops that are delivered to people with learning disabilities, schools, and front-line staff.  Contact joanna.hart@lsup.org.uk for any enquiries.
  • Crime 1:1 Advocacy Project which has a  Victim Support Advocate plus 4 volunteers to offer one to one advocacy to people with learning disabilities in Lewisham who have been victims of any crime.  Contact crimeadvocacy@lsup.org.uk for any enquiries.
  • Voice for Life – a project which promotes self-advocacy, assertiveness and resilience, and which aims to help people with disabilities with low confidence to find and express their voice.  It covers topics such as barriers to speaking up and being heard, relationships, feelings, and transition. Groups run on a Wednesday. Contact alina.apopei@lsup.org.uk for any enquiries.
