Open Door 1

When a diagnosis of Dementia is given, at what ever stage, the options available to the sufferer and their families are very limited. Our group is a lifeline to both the sufferer and carer as the time provided gives the carer chance to partake in activities of their choice whilst knowing that their cared for is in safe and competent hands and engaging in an activity that is enabling them to keep their skills for as long as possible.

Dementia can be very isolating for many and this form of therapy not only deals with the well being of the person but also has great social aspect to it as it is very often the case that the group is the only outside contact that some receive within the space of the week.  Group members feel relaxed and form relationships with each other and the group leader, giving a feeling of inclusion socially. Sufferers who live alone can very often deteriorate quicker due to there being no stimulation of conversation.  The group form friendly relationships and very often find themselves motivated to go out in couples often helping with situations they would find difficult on their own.

Our group currently meet twice per week on Mondays and Fridays from 10 am to  3pm. We meet at Harwood Court Community Centre Sutton in Ashfield. Members are invited from Ashfield and Mansfield areas and transport to and from the centre is available.  We engage in all kinds of activities and are community based.
