Rumbletums Cafe and Training Project

Rumbletums is a community cafe in Kimberley which offers work experience placements to young people and young adults with learning disabilities. Our age range for trainees is from 16 years of age to 30.

Trainees can gain experience and vocational skills in a range of catering and customer services tasks such as food preparation, cooking and baking, food hygiene, taking customer orders, serving food and drinks, cash handling, cleaning and laundry (cafe towels and aprons).

Some of these vocational skills and the tasks undertaken in the cafe also help enhance life skills. These include communication, money management, basic food preparation, cooking, health and safety, team working and self-confidence. Training programmes are based on a person-centred plan agreed between the young person, their parents/carers and Rumbletums’ staff.

We don’t currently offer accredited training but we hope to do so in the near future.

Rumbletums has four staff members – including a dedicated Training Development Co-ordinator – but the bulk of the staff is made up of volunteers. Many of these are parents of children with learning disabilities or people who have had experience of working or living with young people with additional needs.

We currently have 18 volunteers supporting 20 young people and young adults undertaking training and work experience placements.

We try to be as flexible as possible in the way our placements are arranged and we try to fit each placement, as far as possible, to the needs of the person. Consequently, we have trainees working a range of hours from two per week to 20, the average placement being 3 to 5 hours per week.

Rumbletums is a very busy social enterprise that has established a local reputation for good food and a bright, cheerful and welcoming atmosphere. The cafe is open from 9.30am to 3.00pm from Tuesday to Saturday.
