Special Cooks Company is a small and friendly community based service which has been set up to give young people and adults with a learning disability the opportunity to learn or improve their existing cookery skills, and learn about healthy eating, in a safe environment.
People using the service will a have access to a real life cooking experience in a community kitchen and will work together as a small team to produce a nutritious three course meal each week for up to 25 people. The service is staffed by people who are both experienced in working with young people and adults with learning difficulties and who are committed to giving them as many opportunities and experiences in life as possible.
The emphasis of the service is on making it personalised to the needs of the people using it. For some it maybe a way of getting out and meeting people who have the same interests as them, while for others it maybe a way of gaining valuable work experience which they could use on a CV, or learning to have a more healthier lifestyle by eating better. Whichever it is the service is committed to tailoring the experience to meet the expectations of each person’s individual needs and goals.
As the locations for the activity will include the community kitchen of a housing association scheme for older people in Hertford, the service also offers potential opportunities for socialising between older people and young people with learning difficulties who otherwise would not meet, as well as giving the older people concerned access to a value for money, nutritious three course meal.
The overall aim of the company is to give a high quality of service to each individual where each person’s wishes are listened to. We at Special Cooks Company are passionate about developing people’s confidence and helping them to learn new skills.
Transport to and from the service may be available to the young people and adults with learning disabilities who we are working with, depending on how far they live from where the service is located.
