Stockwell Good Neighbours

Stockwell Good Neighbours are a small community based registered charity working with older people who live in the Lambeth area.

We currently have 60 members most of whom are of West Indian origin.

We’ve been operating since 1978 and aim to provide a wide range of social activities and projects to benefit people’s health and well-being, prevent social isolation and keep minds and bodies active.

The wide range of activities on offer include tai chi, arts and crafts, singing workshops, reading together groups bingo, dominoes, quizzes, and zumba classes.  We’ve also developed our own choir and we perform at events in the local community.

In addition we also have occasional projects such as IT training and reminiscence work.

We also have regular outings – to the theatre, to places of historical interest, and day trips to the coast, and there is also an opportunity to access advice and support such as form-filling, and sign-posting to appropriate services

Our weekly meetings held every Monday and Thursday which also offer light refreshments, are in the bright and busy cafe of the Oval House Theatre, which we fill with laughter and noise, and which for many older residents from the local area are a lifeline.

We run on very little money and a lot of goodwill. Members try to raise funds themselves – giving a donation of £3 per meeting if they can afford it, and organising concerts and bring-and-buy sales to keep their centre running.

Extra donations will help the organisation reach out to some of the people on our waiting list who really need a bit more fun in their lives
