Strathaven Airfield

Strathaven Airfield is not just about flying. We have lots of ground – about 45 acres – and we want everyone, pilots or not, to make the most of it.

People tell us it’s a very special place, and a very peaceful place. There is a great sense of space, and some wonderful views. Tranquility is word that many visitors use, not what you’d expect at an airfield!

We’ve always been keen to show people of all ages around our hangars. We’ve even got a biplane climbing frame for the young at heart. But during lockdown we’ve discovered that the airfield is so much more.

One of the model aircraft members was told he should shield. “I’ll go crazy if I can’t leave the house,” he said. “There is so much space at the airfield, can I drive up and walk there?” So we created the Road To Nowhere, a path round part of the airfield, put a table and bench at the end of it and some “sculptures” along it.

To our surprise, it has been a big success, we get about 20 or 30 people a day walking along it!

We’ve now asked people what they’d like us to do with the airfield: a cafe, a community orchard, even a small music amphitheatre where a wee quarry was. Or just plant more flowers. These are some of the options for the future.

So come and join us. Bring a sandwich. Have a seat. Just chill if the stress of current events is too much, enjoy the view, listen to the birds.

And if you have a dream to make the airfield a better place, let’s see if we can make it take flight!
